World COPD Day 2021 Healthy Lungs – Never More Important

Healthy Lungs is the Holy Grail if you are a COPD patient, as its not something we’ve experienced for years. COPD patients are commonly diagnosed at an advanced stage and have been living with the disease unknowingly for many years.

The good news is, why we can’t restore our lungs to their former glory, we can make the most of what we have. We can have OUR healthiest lungs! With COVID circulating around our world we have to be more vigilant than ever with lung health. The old rules are even more important, avoid known triggers such as, cigarette smoke, air pollution and other environmental pollutants which can be found in many workplaces. COVID, flu and Pneumonia vaccines should be kept up to date to give our lungs the best protection.

Be regimental with your medication and check with your healthcare professional to ensure you have an effective inhaler technique, to maximise the dose of your medication. Keeping active and building your exercise capacity will keep your lungs as strong as possible. Whether you have your own exercise regime or are enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation programme, now is the time to ensure being active is a part of your daily lifestyle not something you do every now and then.

Healthy eating is an important part of keeping your lungs as healthy as possible. Remove as many processed foods from your diet as possible. Focus on consuming whole fresh foods which can give your body and lungs the nutrients they need to fight off any infections which may come your way. Vitamin C and zinc supplements can also help with keeping a robust immune system. Make sure you take the time to take in some sun and fresh air, we know how good this can make us feel.

Many patients have been reluctant to venture outdoors since the COVID pandemic arrived in our countries. Keeping medical appointments maybe challenging in some areas but it is even more important to continue to monitor your health through these times. If you are having problems maintaining appointments don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Asking for help can sometimes make complex situations much more manageable.

Make sure you have a COPD Action Plan do ensure you can manage any exacerbations. If this is something you haven’t done, then contact your healthcare professional to help you develop a management plan best suited for you. You can find plenty of useful information on COPD management plans via COPD Foundation, Lung Foundation Australia and British Lung Foundation .

Healthy lungs – Never more important in 2021. Keep up the fight, work towards building your healthiest lungs and breathe easy!

  1. Thank you I love your site, I seem to be excercising and breathing way worse. I used to do half marathons and three day eventing but smoked a lot and worked at a hospital the Drs and nurses all smoked in the 70-80s. Linda
