World COPD Day 2014

What is COPD ? COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a term that includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma which isn’t fully reversible.   It is a long term disease of the lungs that has no cure. My COPD is in my airways.  Years of infections and pollutants has caused scar tissue to build … Continued

When life gets in the way

Finding and keeping a work-life balance Leanne and I decided our lives weren’t busy enough so we recently opened a coffee shop on top of running our main business, so exercise time has been very limited. It’s a common complaint by people who make exercise a part of their life – when real life stuff … Continued

Battling the Cold and Flu season

It’s not to late to Vaccinate Flu season has hit hard with diagnosed cases double of what they were this time last year in Australia. With the flu season set to peak in the next month there’s still time to vaccinate. One of the most important objectives of an athlete and anyone with lung disease … Continued

Season wrap

I started the 2013/14 season with three goals and some trepidation as to how to achieve them. Now, as we celebrate the end of the season, I can look back and reflect on how it has unfolded. Back surgery Up until now, I haven’t talked about the back surgery I had in May last year. … Continued

Cairns. Result part 2

Race Day There was a strong wind warning and a forecast for rain on race day, so I didn’t sleep well the night before. Believe it or not, I was actually hoping the event would be called off – not a good mindset for race day. When I looked out the window there wasn’t much … Continued

Cairns Ironman 2014 Part 1

Overcoming barriers and expectation to get the job done It’s hard to know where to start when writing about my Cairns experience as I had mixed feelings about competing, but three days later I look back with great memories and a sense of achievement. Yet again Ironman has been a learning experience,  a lesson in … Continued

Being prepared

There’s plenty to remember in the week leading up to race day, from preparing and packing your bike to making sure you have what you need for the run. 16+ hours is a long time to cater for everything your body needs: clothing, food, hydration and medication are my main priorities. Weather conditions normally play … Continued

Cairns Ironman

It seemed to take forever for Melbourne Ironman to get here and before you know it Melbourne is done and Cairns is just 2 weeks away. Our training has been less demanding since Melbourne, mainly so we can get to Cairns in as good a condition as possible. Leanne and I sometimes feel we’re underdone … Continued

“Whether you have asthma or COPD managing your condition can be difficult but it can be done. Take your medications and exercise as much as you can, eat a healthy diet and keep the weight down. Set yourself a goal to help keep you on track and always remember no matter how tough it gets there’s always someone doing it tougher than you. Put simply, the body will do what the mind tells it to!!”
